 Drinks at Ivory Vine
« Thread Started on Apr 2, 2008, 10:24pm »

Bane sat alone on a round table, with a glass of beer in one hand and his face resting on the other. It was a quite night, just the way he liked it, he was in the mood for a nice discussion, but by the looks of the others loitering around, they were in no condition to even talk coherently. He smiled; a few streets from here a hooker lay dead in a corner, such an act always left him in a calm mood, so he was willing to let the level of idiocy here slide for tonight. It wasn’t a crime to be stupid, just extremely annoying.

He was in a philosophical mood, even reminiscing a bit. It had been a while since he had arrived in Nexus; he wondered if the law enforcements were starting to get worried about the recent amount of ‘sword related deaths’. Maybe they hopped some sort of superhero would step in for them. Weak blooded cowards, the law enforcements here really were a joke. Maybe he should step in as a super hero, it could come in handy one day. Maybe another day though, at the moment he was enjoying his anonymity.

He looked up once again, maybe someone interesting has entered. He really was starting to get bored again. Maybe he should just leave for the night.

Half an hour ago Paul was sitting at home, the news muted. Martin was on the phone, wanting someone to drink with.

Twenty minutes ago Paul was sitting in Martin's car, in his somewhat presentable clothes. Martin's radio was playing some hip-hop song that made Paul feel suddenly very old.

Ten minutes ago Martin was getting out of the car while Paul stood in the car park. Martin was telling Paul about this great place he’d discovered.

Now Paul was entering the pub door, Martin a couple of steps ahead of him, already making a bee-line for the most beautiful woman in the room.
Paul sighed inwardly. Just like old times.

Paul headed to the bar, fishing a handful of tarnished coins out of his pocket and tossing them onto a mat with an ad for beer. He bought one of the advertised brand, a Valley Dry, on a whim. The barkeeper, a man who by all indications would be fat within ten years, pushed a glass of the golden drink across the bar. Paul lifted it to his lips. Just as he'd thought, it was terrible.

Paul looked around. There weren't that many people in the pub, and those that were there had either the look of the seasoned barfly, or were slurred enough in their speech and movements that they had probably started the party hours ago.
Martin was standing at one end of the bar, with a woman on each side, both looking at him as though he were the most interesting thing in the world, rather than being a balding, slightly overweight accountant.
"I swear, I'll never understand how he does it," thought Paul. "Oh well, if I'm here I may as well have some fun."

Near the centre of the room lay a pool table. Paul walked up, fished in his pocket for a 2-dollar coin, placed it on the edge of the felt then sat down at a table nearby. He waited to see if anyone else wanted a game.

He crouched on the roof as he finished wrapping Soulbinder, making the sword look like a long cloth wrapped bundle, before he set it back into the straps built into his coat and pulled his coat back on.
He dropped down to the ground below, landing lightly, leaving the shadows he headed towards the open door of a bar. He needed a drink.
Entering the bar, Eledor with a click flick of his eyes across the room took in the occupants, several regulars were busy getting drunk, a young man dressed in black with white hair, a balding accountant with two women hanging off him and one man stood by the pool table, from the way he stood a cop off duty maybe.
He sat down at the bar and ordered a drink, letting the barkeeper pick it. He took a sip of it, a beer, and leaned on the bar.
Staring down into into his drink, he fought back old memories that threatened to overwhelm him, memories of atrocities he had witnessed. His face hardened as he took another sip as he forced the memories back to the dark recesses of his mind. He rested his head on his hand and stared down at nothing.

Chris turned off the ignition and listened to a couple of songs on the radio. Bad songs.
"Come on, Chris, you can do this." He said. He turned off the radio and opened the car door. And closed it again. He took a deep breath in, and out. He opened the door again.

He walked around to the back of the car. It was a fairly beat up sort of car. He could have bought something nicer, he did once, but it just got stolen, so he got this instead. He opened up the boot and took out the case. It was heavy, for him at least. Not just the weight of it, but knowing what he would have to do with it.

As he made his way through the parking lot, he tried to stand straight. He sucked in his stomach and pushed out his chest. He caught a glimpse of his reflection in the window. Still looked fat. At least the leather jacket looks cool, he thought.

He entered the pub and walked up to the bar. This is it he thought. People were looking at him, looking at the case. He took a seat at the bar.

"Um, can I get a rum and coke?" He asked.
"Three fifty."
"Ah, cool." He fished into his pocket. Pants too tight he thought. It was time to buy some bigger clothes but doing that would be the final admittance that he wasn't going to lose the extra weight. The barteneder filled up the glass with ice, poured in a generous shot of rum and added a little coke to top it up. Chris smiled awkwardly, he wasn't a strong drinker. He liked a lot of coke with his rum. He opened his mouth, but closed it again. What was he going to say? "Excuse me, this drink you poured me is too strong. Can you add some more coke?" The looks. No, he'd drink it and try not to cringe too much with every sip. He handed over the change and the bartender nodded towards Chris's case and raised a questioning eyebrow at him.
Chris smiled nervously.
"Uh, it's open mic night, right?"
The bartended didn't smile. "Sure, starts at 9:30."
Chris checked his watch. Half an hour then. He had some time to kill. He took a sip of his rum and coke, and turned away from the bartender so he couldn't see Chris cringe at the taste. With a drink in his hand, he started to finally feel a little better about being here. Though the lack of any other musicians made him more nervous again. He took stock of the pub, it was fairly sparse right now. The jukebox was playing some pop song and Chris casually walked over to it and took a look at the rest of the songs. He decided apon some Radiohead. Paranoid Android and Creep . He smiled and walked off. When nobody was looking he pointed subtley at the jukebox and Radiohead kicked into life. Sure, he could have spent two bucks and just picked the songs manually, but where was the fun in that?
He took another look around the pub, and was surprised to see somebody he recognised. It was the guy from the park, the one who had come to help with that wierd old guy. He looked bored.

Chris walked over to the table and gave a little wave. "Hey. The guy from the park."

Sighing, he downed his drink in one go and stood up, he needed to do something to pass the time. He looked around the room, noticing the relatively overweight musician trying to chat with the bored guy, he noticed that the cop was standing by the pool table.
Shrugging Eledor wandered over, "Care for a game?" he asked gruffly.

The Figure in robes entered the bar, in had just started to rain but it was heavy and the rain had drenched the robes, the figure looked around the bar, its face in darkness. It moved towards the Pool Table and stood at the end of it, its head tilted to the side and then back strait.

"Excuse me Eledor, Paul and Chris, I have a letter for you, from someone Important" It's voice sounded like a mans but it had a robotic sound to it, It dropped the letter onto the table, two red eyes appeared inside the hood and it ran out of the Bar.

Bane smiled a small half-smile to himself; as he wondered what time it was. Must be peak hour he presumed, as within the space of at least 2 minutes four different people had entered the bar. He hadn’t thought this place to be so popular. Hopefully the newest flood of people wouldn’t be as monotonous as the rest of the bars inhabitants, drinking away their problems far into the night.

One of the more recent faces noticed him and walked over, a glass of coke in his hand, sipping delicately. Bane returned the wave with a nod of his head and a smile, gesturing to one of the seats around him, all the while trying to remember where he knew the man from. This was always the case, Bane knew he didn’t blend in with a crowd and more often then not someone he had only met once would recognize him. After seeing so many people and taking so many lives, old faces were often hard to remember, tending to blend in with one another.

Then he remembered, this was the guy from the park, the one not lying on the ground. He assumed from the man friendly posture that nothing had gone wrong that night, he had always wondered if he had stumbled upon that dead man or not. “So how did that guy go?” Bane asked, inviting him to conversation, “Sorry to rush off on you like that, I was in a bit of a hurry.”

However before Bane could say more, or before the other man had a chance to respond, The door swung wide letting in a torrent of rain before closing again now with a drenched, hooded figure inside. Strange, Bane thought, I never would have guessed it was going to rain earlier. The figure announced it had a letter for three names, before dropping it on a pool able where two men were about to start a game.
Bane shrugged and looked at the man from the other night, wondering if he were one of the three.

Paul smiled faintly as a man in a heavy coat approached the table. "Care for a game?" the man asked in a gruff voice.

Before Paul could respond a hooded figure ran up to the table, with glowing red eyes visible through the shroud of darkness that made the figure's face impossible to make out.
Paul stifled a gasp at the sight, remembering the time, a few months back, when he had first seen a face like that one. But then again it was a fairly common schtick among those who preferred to hide their features, so it probably meant nothing.

Then the strange figure was gone. Paul barely registered the casual way that he had identified three people in the bar by name, including Paul himself. Unfortunately many of the other patrons were looking in the direction of the pool table.
Also there was an envelope, sitting right in the centre of the table.

"Oh, what the hell," said Paul, picking up the envelope an ripping it open with a slight tearing sound. He knew he should have waited for the other patron's to turn back to their drinks, but he was as close to having his superhero status revealed as he had ever been. It didn't probably wouldn't matter if it was taken another step.

He shook the envelope and a letter landed on the table.

The letter read like this:

Hello Gentlemen,
I have just awoken from a long, long sleep and what I have seen has pleased me
You heroes no longer protect just the innocent, you now protect the Corrupt and
the Criminals along side the innocent....but the point of this letter is not to debate
you fools the point of this letter is to challenge you... Very soon I will make a move
to show you my skill, I will steal three of the most valued Items of this city and all
you have to do is stop me, Nothing too hard.

From Lord Vampirious

P.S another letter will arrive with you clues very soon

Eledor spun to face the man who entered, something was off about him. He watched as the strange thing, it didn't quite seem human, made its way up to the pool table. He couldn't quite make out what the creature looked like.
It spoke and his eyes widened, how did it know his name? It dropped a letter on the pool table and fled the bar. He had tried to keep a low profile so far with his activities, so far he hadn't done much to attract attention from anyone, as far as he knew at any rate.
His hand instinctively reached for Soulbinder's hilt but he stopped himself, it was probably to late to try and pursue whatever that thing had been and he didn't want to reveal he was carrying a sword.
He glanced over his shoulder and saw that the cop had already torn open the envelope and was reading the letter inside. He read it from where he stood. Perplexed he looked at the cop.
"What the hell?" he asked.

Chris watched silently, confused. He shook his head in disbelief, but walked over to the pool table, leaving his conversation with the man in black forgotten behind him.

He read the letter in the tall man's hand, his brow furrowed with fear.

"Heroes?" He whispered.

Just so you know Lord Vampirious, it's bad form to have you're character know too much about other people's characters before they meet. I don't mind though, as long as you make this stealing stuff interesting.

Paul groaned, a deep, sincere sound.

You just never got away from it all. When it wasn't newspapers or newsflashes on the TV it was crazies dropping off letters in pubs. Crazies who knew about the superpowers were the worst by far. Paul would have to check the police databases for that guy, first chance he got.

Paul dropped the letter to the table and deposited a coin in the slot on the side. A series of clicking sounds came from the inside of the table followed by a loud rolling noise. Paul began to fish pool balls out of the side of the table.

"We can't show that anything is amiss," Paul whispered. "So just keep doing what you were doing, and send that letter to the authorities tomorrow." He looked at the man in the jacket. "I believe we were going to play a game," he said holding out his hand, "I'm Paul by the way."

Black Cat ran swiftly across a roof top, his feet barely making contact and produced no audible sound. Rain pelted his face and shoulders, covering the roof in water, turning the rough roof tiles into a slick slant leading to a long drop. Black Cat swept his wet hair from his eyes and leapt from the roof, landing on a balcony a short way down. Grabbing the railing his swung his body over and dropped silently on to the ground.
He was tense and really felt like releasing some steam. He shimmered into his favorite form, a slim, relatively small black haired man of about 22. The boyish face he had adopted helped him to pass quickly from the memories of anyone he meets. He shook his hair again and looked around. He spied a bar at the end of the street and began to walk towards it. It had been a while since he had allowed himself to be seen. He last mission was a difficult one that required a lot of information, information that could only be acquired by stealth and intrusive techniques. He walked up to the door and a sign read “The Ivory Vine.” He shrugged and pushed the door open saying loudly:
“What’s Crack-a-lackin’ everyone? Let’s get this par-tay started!”
He had taken one half-step into the bar when he realized he was greeted with dead silence. Black Cat closed his eyes and sighed before looking out the door to see if there was any other pubs in the street where he could make a less grand and substantially less idiotic entrance; he found none. Sighing again, he walked across to the counter.
“Bourbon and coke and 3 shots of vodka, please.” He ordered.

Bane’s eyes narrowed as the man walked off. Clearly he was Chris, Paul or Eledor; else he wouldn’t have seemed too interested. Bane wanted to follow him, have a look at the letter, he had to admit his curiosity had been picked up. Somehow though, he got the impression they wouldn’t be too interested in informing him. Judging from the face who that was holding the letter, unless he just didn’t like being interrupted from a game of pool.

Bane slowly stood up, wondering whether to walk across or not. He was starting to think he should let the three mull on it before intruding, however he couldn’t just sit down again. If anything it would just look simply stupid. Simultaneously a young looking man burst into the building, sprouting some ridiculous phrase and thankfully diverting everyone attention.

Bane picked up what was left of his drink and walked over to the bar, finishing it on the way. He sat down near the stranger and placed his glass on the bar.
"Three shots of vodka ay?" Bane smiled inwardly, wondering how old this man really was. Not many will go out for a big night alone.

Eledor nodded at Paul and at the muscian, he took Paul's offered hand firmly and gave it a firm shake, "I'm known as Eledor." he said gruffly. He felt a little out of his depth not being used to all this smoke and mirrors nonsense. He picked up a pool cue, "Game of eight-ball correct?" he asked as he tested the weight and length of the cue he had picked up, he put that one back in the rack and removed a longer cue, feeling more satisfied with the balance of this one, he fished out a coin form one of his coats pockets, "Heads I break, Tails you break, agreed?" he asked.
